Adding credit cards and liabilities

Credit cards are added and managed entirely from Settings → Accounts, alongside your checking and savings accounts, not from the Assets & Liabilities page.

When you add a credit card there, you can set a starting balance, a payment due date, a credit limit, and a minimum payment. Credit cards use an inverted-sign convention: a positive balance means you owe that amount (shown in red); a negative balance means the card is in credit and owes you instead.

The Liabilities tab on the Assets & Liabilities page is for everything else you owe: loans, personal debt, anything that isn't a credit card. Credit card debt already counts toward your net worth automatically once it's added in Settings, so it doesn't need a second entry there.

This used to be split across two places, a leftover from an earlier version of Gramafin, and has since been consolidated so each credit card only exists in one spot, with one balance, instead of risking being counted twice.

Frequently asked questions

I added a card as a liability before this change. What do I do?

Delete the old liability entry and add the card properly under Settings → Accounts instead, so it isn't counted twice.

Can a liability have a due date like a credit card does?

No, generic liabilities are a simple name and value only. Due-date reminders are specific to credit cards in Settings.
